The Person Who Never Was

Braulio Aguilera is a Melbourne-based visual artist specializing in oil painting and portraiture. Originally from Chile, his work combines classical techniques with influences from cinema, vintage culture, contemporary life, and popular media, creating paintings that explore identity, memory, and personal transformation.

The Statement

I create art to make friends.

My paintings are inspired by the things that fascinate me: vintage aesthetics, cinema, video game culture, beauty, humor, and the deeper questions that accompany everyday life. Through portraiture and figurative work, I explore who I am, who I am becoming, and the person I once imagined I could be.

My work reflects an ongoing process of change. I do not believe personal growth has a final destination; I am interested in the movement itself—the learning, the questioning, and the possibility of becoming a little better than I was yesterday.

In a world that often feels increasingly artificial and disconnected, I want my paintings to create genuine human connection. Whether through nostalgia, vulnerability, beauty, or playfulness, my goal is to remind people of something real.

Ultimately, my art is an acceptance of my own truth, and an invitation for others to reconnect with theirs.
